Her professional wrestling name shall be Taylor the Terrible Teether

So yesterday was a totally rainy, gloomy day in Asheville. And because Taylor is still nursing her Grandma-hangover and I was going a bit stir-crazy, we had Paige and Elliot over for some wine and serious playing.

Our Taylor-Elliot play dates are getting more and more fun. And by fun, I mean Taylor is constantly tackling Elliot to the ground and trying to kiss her.

And while the first couple full-body hugs were cute, the longer they played, the more aggressive Taylor got with her BFF. In fact, she even BIT her. Twice. NOT cool.

So by the end of the afternoon, we tallied lots of hugs and kisses, a few flesh wounds and an empty bottle of vino. Oh, and two extremely exhausted itty-bitties.

A little slice of heaven

Well, the Famous Amys caravan landed back in Asheville yesterday afternoon, and with most of today spent regrouping, unpacking and doing laundry, I can finally reflect on the wonderfulness that was the last five days we spent at Folly Beach. And even though the weather barely got above 60 degrees, it was one of the more heavenly beach trips I’ve ever taken. Our rental was a great condo that was right on the beach and only two blocks from Center Street. Breathtaking views and a stone’s throw from the crab shacks and pubs. Perfect.

Chris and I took off for the coast on Friday morning, leaving Ruby at the kennel and Taylor-tot with Grandma. And even though I had never been away overnight from my daughter, no real tears were shed. For two reasons – I was totally confident that Sue would not be more than two inches away from Taylor the whole time, and Chris and I hadn’t been on a good, two-of-us road-trip in about ten months. Four hours of loud music and hilarious conversations, mostly of the cuteness which is our daughter.

So being first-time child-free parents, of course we proceeded to drink a few too many cocktails, stay up way past our bedtime and relish being able to eat in public without cleaning up banana poofs from under the table. We also just relaxed, read our books and enjoyed Folly Beach. Chris and I have been making annual trips to Folly since we moved to Asheville six years ago. It’s a small island, just south of Charleston, that embraces a laid back atmosphere and good food. On Saturday early-afternoon, we were lucky enough to catch the first-ever Folly Gras parade though town. Which basically consisted of a band, half the town dressing up and throwing beads, and the world’s strongest Bloody Mary.

We were also happy to have beers with our fabulous friends, Megan and Patrick, who are Asheville-transplants that moved to the beach a few years ago. And, as always, we enjoyed catching-up and drank way too much.

On Sunday morning we soaked up the sunshine on our porch, took numerous deep, sighing breaths, and then met up with Sue and Taylor just outside of town. And as fun as it was to sleep in and relax on the beach, the smile that my daughter gave me when I saw her for the first time reminded me of why I have the best job in the entire world. And because the wind on the beach was pretty rough, we only brought her down to the water a few times. But she really seemed to enjoy it.

Especially the seagulls.

We all had a lot of fun at the beach. And Taylor definitely had a lot of fun being spoiled by her Grandma for the past week. And now, for the next few days, our routine will consist of non-stop playtime, guided walking throughout the entire house and 45-minute bubble baths that involve half the toys in the nursery. So, yes, I was sure to get in my last shower before Sue flew out this morning. Nothing’s more brutal than a grandparent-hangover.

Moving, grooving, swimming, splashing

Taylor started showing off the minute her Grandma got off the plane yesterday, complete with big cheesy grins, booty-shaking dances and her first, yes her first, STEP. It begins. And wouldn’t you know it, now that we’re armed with video cameras, she won’t do it again. So I don’t know if it was a fluke or an introduction to the nightmare that will soon become my life chasing her around.

And even though I’m not posting pics of her taking steps, I am able to share some pictures of baby-T working her magic in the pool this morning during swim lessons. Much thanks to our entourage, aka Chris and Sue, for recording the moment.

As you can see, Taylor is very comfortable and content in the water. Let’s just hope she’s this happy when we’re all at the beach this weekend.

Goldilocks in the making

Remember when Taylor-tot was just an itty-bitty and I would pull all three of her hairs across her head and secure them with a bow?

Well, now she actually has enough hair to work with. Not exactly long, flowing locks, but lengthy enough that it hangs down her forehead and over her ears. So for the past few days, I’ve been trying out some new styles and barrettes. Tah-dah!

And after about two seconds of cuteness, she will reach up and rip the clippies off her head. And then try to eat them. So it’s only supervised hair-cuteness.

Lovefest

How appropriate that on Valentine’s Day, Taylor reunited with her long, lost love, Christmas dolly, who had been in hiding since early January.

And all was wonderful, until I told her that she wasn’t old enough for chocolate truffles yet.

Happy Love Day!

Ten months old

Taylor is ten months old today. Two months to go until the big One. Unbelievable. Chris and I are having flashbacks from a year ago, me rather swollen with a constant supply of Fritos and ice cream, and everyone warning us how fast the first year goes. And we were all, Really? This is the most exciting thing ever and we’re just going to savor every second of it. And now we’re all, Are you kidding me? She has already grown out of some of her 12 month clothes.

And now she’s standing by herself! And I say it with such force because she’s getting more and more stable, and we know what’s coming next. Walking. Dear Lord, I’m not ready for walking. Right now we have a good system where I put her in the jump-up and take a shower. And she’s happy doing that because she’s NOT walking. Which means that if she continues this progress I’m going to become one stinky Momma.

Another advancement came in Ruby’s love of our newer addition this past month. Which I fault completely on the increase of Taylor’s finger food portions. I actually watched my baby hand-feed my dog scrambled eggs this morning. And I haven’t had to sweep or mop the dining area for about two weeks. It’s a win-win. And other than eggs, their favorites this past month were kiwi, pineapple, avocado and biter biscuits.

Taylor’s also started recognizing certain words, such as her name, Ruby and Kisses. You say, Where’s Ruby? And she’ll swivel her head in fury to try and spot Ruby. Who’s usually under the table licking the floor. And if you say, Give me kisses, she’ll open her mouth and nose dive on your face. And you’ll feel all special until you say, Give the monkey kisses, and she’ll open-mouth kiss her stuffed animal. Yep, she’ll pretty much kiss anything you tell her to. Much to the delight of her father, who would rather die that have his daughter get a reputation as the frequent open-mouth kisser.

Something else she started loving this month are cartoons. During a come apart one afternoon, I switched over to Sesame Street and she stopped in her tracks and stared at the television. Big smiles and a little bit of bouncing, and Momma and Daddy have a new bullet in the chamber. We don’t use the cartoon-soothing-method often, but it always works. And Chris has gladly volunteered for the animation-watching 6 am shift on the weekends. Because my husband has discovered Sponge Bob Square Pants, and thinks it is hilarious. And I think it is wonderful too, because I get to sleep until 8 am.

And just so you don’t label us a solve-our-problems-with-TV Family, we’ve been very diligent in reading to Taylor from her vast children’s book library. Not that we have to coax her into it. She loves pulling books down from her bookshelf. It’s her new favorite game. And after she pulls down a book, she’ll stop and flip through all the pages. She doesn’t pay any attention to what’s actually on the page, but she LOVES flipping through the book. Hey, it’s a start.

We also started parent-child swim lessons at the YMCA this month. And the cuteness that is my daughter in a ruffley-butt swimsuit it too much to handle. Her belly sticking out and her chubby legs! A person could feast on those thighs for weeks. It’s not the most intense class, we basically just spend the half-hour going back and forth across the pool with Taylor clutched to a bath toy, squealing in delight and splashing water in my face. So she’s not exactly learning how to swim, but I just want her to be familiar with the pool by this summer. Because for the first summer since forever, Momma’s going to be able to spend most of her afternoons at the pool getting a tan. And maybe I’m being totally outlandish in thinking that I’ll be able to get a savage tan during that two-hour window between lunch and naps, but let me hold onto this for a moment.

And later this month Chris and I have planned a four-night vacation to Folly Beach, which is just south of Charleston, and we’re going to be able to spend two nights as a couple and then two nights as parents. Much thanks to Chris’s mom for coming in to babysit and then bringing Taylor to meet us. Our first of many trips to the ocean. I can’t wait to see my daughter’s reaction to the beach – I’m guessing the sand will be a bit horrific to her. But dipping her toes in the Atlantic for the first time – Well, that vision makes me so happy and proud that my heart just might burst.

Spring fever

We had a pretty uneventful weekend at the Amys house. The weather was in the 60s, which meant that Chris was working hard at the course. And because I was in a serious need for some vitamin D and fresh air, Taylor and I dusted off the jogging stroller and met up with Paige and Elliot at Carrier Park for a few hours of running, walking, gossip and cuteness.
