It’s all happening at the zoo

Last weekend I adventured south to Birmingham with the kids to spend some quality time with my family. My Granddaddy and Libba have back-to-back birthdays, and we were also celebrating my sister’s baby shower. That’s a lot of Blackwell partying, y’all. Especially since my Mom flew down from Iowa to partake in all the festivities.

But since the parties weren’t scheduled until Saturday and Sunday, and Libba took Friday off, we all decided to bring the kids to the Birmingham Zoo. And to watch Taylor and Luke experience a place that I grew up going to every summer was pretty awesome.

There had been a lot of changes to it since when we frequented as kids. Some bad:  The train ride is now officially lame. Some good:  The opportunity to pay a few bucks to feed a giraffe out of your hand. And my little girl was brave enough to let the giant animal with the long, slimy tongue pluck leaves out of her tiny hand. I was so proud of her.

And we saw lots of other fun animals:

Both the kids and the adults had a lot of fun, and I believe we will try to make it an annual Birmingham outing for my family as well.
