Snot-fest

It all started Wednesday afternoon with the white dot that has appeared in the center-right part of Taylor’s lower gums. The area to where she pushes everything she’s chewing on. Tooth, right? So I rubbed a little numbing gel on it and gave her some Tylenol and lots and lots of snuggles. Thursday morning she wakes up with a stuffy nose which, as the day progresses, turns into a full blown head cold. As if I didn’t think a teething baby was challenging enough. And to throw another wrench at my head, Chris had already left for Louisville to be wined and dined at the Ryder Cup.

So here I am, alone with a congested, cranky newborn and a rehabilitating lab who has accumulated enough nervous energy in the past week to power a small city. And after hearing my daughter suck snot for ten hours, I finally called our pediatrician to see if there was anything I could do to help her. Like try and translate BLOW YOUR NOSE into baby-talk. And when I finally got a hold of the nurse and detailed to her that my five month old daughter was teething and had a runny nose, she responded with, This is your first child, right? Which really means, Ma’am. I’ve got a woman on hold whose son has a bone sticking out of his skin. Use some common sense and call me back if you’re daughter has turned green or sprouted horns.

Seriously though, the nurse gave me some helpful tips and I spent the rest of the day sitting with Taylor in a steamed-up bathroom and installing a cool-mist humidifier. I also tried shooting some baby-saline up her nose, to which her face turned tomato-red and she screamed AT me for an hour. And, even worse, I had to take her temperature for the first time. To which all I can say is, Taylor, Momma is so sorry she had to do that. I PROMISE you I will invest in an ear-thermometer next time we are at the store.

So now we’re on day three of snot-fest, and I can’t tell if she’s feeling any better or if I’m just less neurotic about the whole situation. The nurse said her cold could last up to 10-12 days, which means for the next 10-12 days my routine will be to not put Taylor down all day long, suck boogers out of her nose with a rubber bulb-thingy, put her to bed and then drink a glass of wine the size of a football helmet.

Good luck with the snot. You can look forward to that and cold symptoms (oh, and loose stool)each time a tooth comes in. And yes, get an ear thermometer. Spend the extra money and get one that will take it FAST. And have you stocked up on cute absorbent bibs? Because she'll probably be wearing one at all time the next 6 months.
Enjoy your wine. And although you may be tempted to share some with your daughter as she is screaming, don't. (A little whisky works better)(Just kidding)(kind of)(no, I am)

Sorry about the first cold! I'm with you...if they only knew how to blow their nose, life would be much better! I'm sure the nurse told you this, or you already figured it out, but have you elevated one side of her bed? Addison would get so mad b/c she couldn't suck on her pacifier with a stuffy nose and lifting her bed on one side seemed to help things drain. Also, Johnson & Johnson has a "vapor bath" bubble bath you can buy to put in Taylor's bath--it's a green bottle. Close the door, put that her bath and just make sure you have a tissue for Taylor and yourself b/c that stuff causes drainage whether you have a cold or not (for us it does anyway)! Good luck.

As far as teething and simple irritability goes, go out and find some Teething Tablets by Hyland's Homepathics - just drop a couple in her mouth and they dissolve instantly. We always have an ample supply of those in our house and I swear by them! The tablets are full of natural goodness like chamomille and such that instantly make baby relax... good luck. :)

It is totally misery to have your little one have a virus + teething. Hang in there. It will get better. There is a Baby Vicks Vapo-rub and start counting down the days when Taylor can start taking infant drop Motrin - it is a lifesaver!!!!!!!

Both my kids got runny noses when they where or are teething. It is so hard to decide if it is something worse or just a tooth. Brynn is cutting her last one year molar and we are hoping for a break for a few months at least. Good luck. Give her hugs from us.

Poor Taylor......I hope things are going better. It's tough Moms when our babies are not feeling well. Take care......and remember this too will pass and she'll be back to normal in no time!
